Unlv Wind Orchestra Concert On Oct. 5

LAS VEGAS -- The UNLV Wind Orchestra will perform a "Liturgical Dances"
concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5, 2000, in Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall at the
University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The program will include "Awayday" conducted by Tom Leslie, "St. Anthony
Variations" conductedc by Takayoshi "Tad" Suzuki, Richard Strauss' "Concerto No.
1 for Horn and Wind Ensemble" featuring soloist Chris Castellanos, "Salut
d'amour" arranged by Toshinari Iijima, and "Liturgical Dances" conducted by Tom
Leslie.

The orchestra has added several members, including graduate students from
America's top music schools such as the Cleveland Institute of Music and the
Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.

As director of bands at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, professor
Thomas G. Leslie has earned national recognition for the quality performances of
his ensembles. During his tenure at UNLV, his bands have received critical
acclaim from the international music world. Professor Leslie was inducted as a
member of the distinguished American Bandmasters Association in 1997. In
addition to presently serving as the Western Division Chair for the National
Band Association, he continues to be a long-standing member of both the College
Band Directors National Association and the Music Educators national Conference.

Takayoshi Suzuki teaches music education and conducting at UNLV. During his
days as a student at the Tokyo National University of Arts, Suzuki was active as
a trombonist with several recording studios, including the Tokyo Kosei Wind
Orchestra and the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. After earning his degree, he
was music teacher and band director at his alma mater, Fukuoka Technical
University High School. Over the next 15 years, the band won the Gold Prize
five times in the All Japan Band Contest, as well as silver four times and the
prestigious Grand Prix Award four times. When the band traveled once to
Chicago, they received a 15-minute standing ovation after a performance. Among
many professional associations, he is a member of the World Association of
Symphonic Bands and Ensembles.

Ticket prices are $8 general admission, $5 Students, Senior and military,
and free for UNLV staff and faculty. For information about tickets, call the

Arts Center Box Office, 702-895-3801. The box office is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
