| Two young people were arrested on extortion from the Oregon Tribe |
10/12/2001 Two people were arrested for supposedly sending a letter to the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians, demanding $1 million to keep quiet about `bad things? the tribe was doing. Investigators left several backpacks in few places around Roseburg to tempt the extortionist Saturday. A man was arrested after he tried to take possession of the backpacks and then run off the area. He was charged with suspicion of theft by extortion, his name is Lucas Walter Register, and he is 20 years old. A 17-year-old girl whose name was not released is suspected partner in the crime, was later arrested, said the Douglas County sheriff's office. The tribe, which operates the Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort in Canyonville, received a typed letter demanding money about two weeks ago, according to the tribe's attorney, Wayne Shammel. `We know that you're involved in these bad things, but we support what the tribe is doing and we don't want to go public.
