10/16/2001 A bill to combat international money-laundering that includes provisions that crack down on Internet gambling has approved yesterday by the House Financial Services Committee.
The bill contains a section that revives language against Internet gambling that House Financial Services Committee Chairman James Leach, R-Iowa, had introduced before.
Internet gambling has proven itself as a "haven" for money laundering. The money-laundering bill state specifically forbids gambling businesses from "accepting bank instruments in connection with unlawful Internet gambling." Which include credit cards, checks and electronic fund transfers.
At present the FBI has two cases open involving money-laundering activities within Internet gambling, and several pending cases link Internet gambling to organized crime.
The language includes civil penalties as criminal penalties of both fines and up to five years in prison. It allows both federal and state suits to be lodged against Internet gambling operations.
The Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) said it reject language's inclusion in the legislation. ITAA President Harris Miller said, "Piling on anti-Internet gaming and other language merely clouds the critical issues involved and raises the possibility of unnecessary and counter-productive delays,?
Other forms of Internet gambling legislation have come to the House and Senate floors before. Meanwhile, a House bill outlawing certain forms of Internet gambling that was rejected on the House floor.
