7/27/2001 June 27, 2001 LAS VEGAS - Heavyweight championship challenger Michael Grant will fight for the first time in almost 15 months when he takes on highly regarded Jameel McCline in 10-round semi-main event on the Shane Mosley-Adrian Stone WBC welterweight championship card, presented by Cedric Kushner Promotions at Caesars Palace, Saturday, July 21.
The 6-foot-7-inch Grant will be fighting for the first time since meeting Lennox Lewis for the world heavyweight championship April 29, 2000, in New York City. Grant, who has a record of 31-1 with 22 knockouts, suffered his only defeat in that bout. Since then, the 28-year-old Grant has signed an exclusive promotional agreement with Cedric Kushner Promotions and changed trainers; he now is working with Teddy Atlas.
"I'm sure that after one or two wins, Michael will be back where he belongs, at the top, challenging for a world title," said Kushner.
Facing Grant is 260-pound Jameel McCline. The 31-year-old has a record of 25-2-3 with 15 knockouts and is undefeated since 1996. McCline, from Port Jefferson, N.Y., is coming off a decision over former International Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion Al Cole May 25 in Norfolk, Va., and a first-round knockout of King Ipitan Jan. 24 in Las Vegas.
Grant, born in Chicago and now living in Norristown, Pa., has wins over Andrew Golota (who he stopped in the 10th round during 1999) and David Izon (who he halted in the fifth round in 1998).
Also on the undercard will be a second 10-round heavyweight bout, in which undefeated Gerald Nobles of Philadelphia takes on Ron Guerrero of Corpus Christi, Texas. The 30-year-old Nobles has a record of 19-0 with 15 knockouts while the 27-year-old Guerrero has a mark of 13-3-1 with nine knockouts. The bout starts at 4:30 p.m., with doors to the Caesars Palace Pavilion opening at 4 p.m.
The Grant-McCline fight starts at approximately 6 p.m., with the Mosley-Stone title bout beginning at approximately 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $50, $100, $200 and $300, plus a $3 handling fee per ticket, and may be purchased by telephone with a major credit card by dialing (800) 634-6698 or (702) 731-7865, or in person at the Caesars Palace Forum Casino Box Office.
In the main event, WBC welterweight champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley will defend his title against Adrian Stone. This will be the second time Mosley defends his WBC 147-pound title at Caesars Palace. Mosley's most recent successful defense was March 10 at Caesars Palace, when he stopped Shannan Taylor in the fifth round. Mosley won the WBC welterweight championship June 17, 2000, in Los Angeles with a unanimous decision over Oscar De La Hoya.
The 29-year-old Mosley, from Pomona, Calif., has a record of 37-0 with 34 knockouts. Stone, who will be 30 years old two days before the fight, has a record of 30-3-2 with 23 knockouts. Originally of Bristol, England, and now living in Paterson, N.J., Stone is the International Boxing Organization light middleweight champion.
Kushner has been promoting cards in Las Vegas since 1993. He presents more than 50 world championship and non-title cards a year in North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Australia and Africa.
Caesars Palace, known worldwide as the Home of Champions, is owned and operated by Las Vegas-based Park Place Entertainment, Inc., the world's largest gaming company with 29 properties worldwide operating under the Caesars, Flamingo, Bally's, Grand and Hilton brand names.
The Grant-McCline and Mosley-Stone bouts will be televised on HBO's "World Championship Boxing" broadcast beginning at 6 p.m. PDT, July 21. |
